Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making a brand’s content and web presence easier for AI answer systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI features to find, cite and recommend. If you already invest in SEO, you do not need a separate GEO program. Google’s own guidance treats GEO and AEO work as part of SEO. What changes is the emphasis: answer-first content, genuine third-party corroboration, and AI-specific measurement.

GEO, AEO and SEO in plain English

The terms overlap, but they describe different outcomes. Traditional SEO is still the foundation. AEO focuses on becoming the direct answer. GEO focuses on being cited, mentioned or recommended inside generated answers. AI search visibility is the outcome you measure, not a separate tactic.

TermWhat it meansPrimary outcome
SEOMaking pages crawlable, indexable, relevant and trusted so they can rank in classic search results.Rankings, clicks and leads
AEOWriting and structuring content so a system can lift a direct answer, including featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice and AI answers.Being the extracted answer
GEOMaking content and brand presence easier for generative systems to find, cite and recommend.Citations and brand mentions inside generated answers
AI search visibilityMeasuring how often a brand is cited, mentioned or recommended across a defined set of prompts.Share of voice in AI answers

Why this distinction matters: Google’s July 2026 guidance says that AEO and GEO are terms used for work aimed at AI search experiences, but from Google Search’s perspective, optimizing for those experiences is still optimizing for search. That makes GEO an extension of SEO, not a replacement for it.

Do you need GEO on top of SEO?

You do not need a second, isolated optimization program. You do need to extend your existing SEO approach if being visible in AI answers matters to the business. At BRAVA 360 DIGITAL, the research standard is to run one integrated SEO, AEO and GEO content strategy, then add three things to each relevant brief: a clear answer block, an off-site corroboration target, and an AI visibility measurement entry.

The fundamentals remain the same: useful original content, crawlability, indexation, semantic relevance, descriptive headings and credible evidence. The additional GEO work mainly changes how content is written, how authority is built outside your own website, and how success is measured.

What actually changes when you optimize for AI visibility?

1. Give the answer early, then add depth

The research does not support the claim that AI systems only read the first 20% of an article. In an analysis of 1.2 million ChatGPT answers, 44.2% of citations came from the first 30% of a page, 31.1% from the middle and 24.7% from the final third. More than half came from below the first 30%.

The practical lesson is not to make content artificially short. Put the definition, verdict and strongest evidence near the top, then continue with the depth needed to answer the reader properly. Each major section should make sense on its own, but the page should still read as one coherent article.

2. Build corroboration beyond your own website

Classic SEO often puts heavy emphasis on links and ranking signals. For AI visibility, third-party descriptions of a brand matter because recommendation systems can draw from sources you do not control. In Ahrefs’ observational study of 75,000 brands, YouTube mentions and branded web mentions showed the strongest correlations with ChatGPT visibility. Correlation is not proof of cause, and Google explicitly warns against chasing inauthentic mentions.

For businesses, that means GEO should not become a programme of manufacturing mentions. The useful goal is genuine corroboration through earned coverage, relevant reviews, expert participation, useful video, case studies and other sources that independently describe what the company does.

3. Measure AI answers differently from search rankings

A Google ranking does not tell you whether a brand will be mentioned in ChatGPT, Gemini or Google’s AI experiences. Studies also show that overlap between classic rankings and AI citations changes by engine, query and date. In one Ahrefs analysis, the share of AI Overview citations coming from top-10 pages was 76.1% in July 2025 and 38% in March 2026.

AI answers are also probabilistic. SparkToro reported less than a 1 in 100 chance that ChatGPT would return the same brand list twice in repeated runs. A single prompt is therefore not a ranking. The companion guide for this topic should cover the repeated prompt-panel method, mention rate, recommendation rate, citation rate and share of voice in detail.

A practical way to establish the baseline. BRAVA 360 DIGITAL’s AI Visibility Audit tests real customer questions across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity in English and Arabic. It records whether and how a brand is mentioned, identifies the sources shaping AI visibility, and turns the findings into a Brand Mention Rate with prioritized next steps. Used alongside Search Console and standard SEO reporting, the audit gives businesses a concrete starting point for measuring how they appear in AI answers.

How do AI systems find and use website content?

For Google’s AI features, the website still has to be eligible for search. Google describes a retrieval process that uses its core ranking systems, then draws specific information from relevant pages. It also documents query fan-out, where the system can run several related searches across subtopics before assembling an answer.

This is why one strong page should cover the core question and its genuine sub-questions instead of creating a separate page for every wording variation. Google also says its systems understand meaning and synonyms, so repeating every keyword variation is unnecessary.

For ChatGPT search, OpenAI states that OAI-SearchBot is the crawler used to surface sites in search. GPTBot is a separate crawler associated with model training. A business that wants its pages eligible for ChatGPT search should therefore check OAI-SearchBot access in robots.txt and at the CDN or web application firewall, not just on the page itself.

Which GEO tactics are documented, measured or still unproven?

GEO is a fast-moving field, and many recommendations are repeated before they are properly tested. The attached research separates official documentation from measured evidence and from claims that remain unproven.

Tactic or claimWhat the evidence saysPractical decision
Answer-first writingMeasured citation data favors strong information early on the page, but no fixed answer length is documented.Answer the primary question near the top, then expand with evidence and depth.
Original evidence and sourced claimsGoogle asks for helpful, non-commodity content. The Princeton GEO study found that adding statistics, credible quotations and citations improved visibility in its test setup.Publish first-hand evidence where available and source every material claim.
Third-party mentionsBrand and YouTube mentions correlate with AI visibility in large observational data. Google warns against inauthentic mentions.Invest in genuine earned authority, not manufactured references.
llms.txtThe research found no controlled evidence of a citation benefit, and Google says it can be ignored for its AI search features.Do not treat llms.txt as a Google GEO lever.
Schema as an AI ranking factorA matched Ahrefs test on 1,885 pages found no clear lift in ChatGPT, AI Mode or AI Overviews.Keep accurate structured data for clarity and search features, but do not sell it as a GEO ranking tactic.
One page per AI questionGoogle documents query fan-out and warns against scaled content created to manipulate search.Cover related sub-questions on one strong page when they share the same intent.
AI crawler accessOpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search. Google and Bing still require normal crawlability and indexability.Check robots.txt, CDN and WAF access as part of technical SEO.

Why isn’t my company appearing in ChatGPT or other AI answers?

One missing brand mention does not prove a visibility problem because AI answers vary from run to run. If the pattern persists across repeated tests, the research supports checking a small set of fundamentals before adding new tactics:

  1. Eligibility: confirm that the relevant pages are indexable and visible in normal search, and that OAI-SearchBot is not blocked if ChatGPT search visibility matters.
  2. Answer quality: make sure the page gives a direct, accurate answer and contains something non-commodity, such as first-hand evidence, a named method or original data.
  3. Topic coverage: cover the real sub-questions on one page instead of publishing thin pages for each variation.
  4. External corroboration: review what independent websites, reviews, communities and video sources say about the brand. Treat these as signals to understand, not channels to manipulate.
  5. Measurement quality: test a fixed prompt set repeatedly. Do not treat one answer as a stable ranking.

So what should a company already doing SEO change?

The simplest answer is to keep the SEO foundation and add GEO discipline where it affects the content and the measurement. For each important topic, BRAVA 360 DIGITAL’s content standard adds three fields to the brief:

  • Answer block: the definition or verdict that should be understandable on its own.
  • Off-site corroboration target: the independent sources, proof or earned coverage that should support the brand’s claim.
  • Prompt-panel entry: the prompts that will later be used to measure whether the brand is mentioned, recommended or cited.

This avoids creating a parallel content program for GEO. It also reduces the risk of chasing tactics that sound AI-specific but have little evidence behind them.

GEO vs SEO: the final verdict

GEO is not a replacement for SEO, and most companies do not need it as a separate programme. They need SEO that is ready for generative search. That means technically accessible pages, original and accurate content, clear answers, real evidence, genuine third-party corroboration and a measurement method built for probabilistic AI answers.

If your current SEO work already covers crawlability, relevance and authority, GEO should be treated as an additional layer of writing, corroboration and measurement. If those SEO foundations are weak, adding AI-specific tactics first is unlikely to solve the underlying problem.
